As we all know, a career as a property agent in Singapore can be the job of your dreams. Apart from the possibility of earning huge commissions, you get to be your own boss and have the freedom to work whenever and wherever you want. Plus, there’s always the chance of landing a massive commission where you get enough money for life.

A property agent commission can easily hit five- to six-digits, with some even earning a million-dollar commissions. That’s why it’s understandable why many would think that working as a property agent is one of the best jobs in the world. Aside from the possibility of earning huge property agent commissions, you get to be your own boss and have the freedom to work whenever you want. In fact, back in April 2015, a property agent earned a whopping $1.5 million commission after selling a penthouse at Le Nouvel Ardmore for $51 million. With so many perks, it’s no wonder that a career as a property agent in Singapore is relatively sought-after. Unfortunately, not everything about being a property agent is rosy. So before you apply for a Singapore property agent license, here are some things that you should know first.

1) You will face rejection all the time

As a property agent, you need to be able to take rejection. This is because most of your clients will not buy or even rent the property that you have been showing them. It is tough to get through this stage if you are not prepared for it. If you are not used to being rejected by people, then I would suggest that you do not enter into this field because it can be very depressing at times.

2) You need excellent relationship management skills

There are many people working in this industry and they all have different personalities. You need to be able to manage these people so that they work well together as a team and sell as many properties as possible within a short period of time. If one person fails in his role, then it could affect the entire team which could lead to failure for everyone involved in the business venture.

3) You need to work long hours every day

As a property agent, you need to be available when your clients are. This means that you will have to work long hours every day, especially during weekends and public holidays. This is because most people look for properties on weekends or during the weekdays before they go on holiday.

4) It can be highly stressful

Being a property agent is not easy and being successful as one takes a lot of hard work and dedication. It is also very stressful especially if you have a lot of clients who are constantly asking questions or requesting feedbacks from you. In addition, there are times when some buyers may change their minds about a certain property and this could mean that you need to contact another buyer for them to take over their place in the purchase list. You will also see the stress levels rising especially when there are multiple buyers for one property or when there are no buyers at all for some properties which means that you will not get paid for your efforts in showing them around the places that they want to rent or buy in Singapore.

Conclusion:

Being a property agent in Singapore can be a challenging task. As stated by one interviewee, "it's easy to get burned out" when you're dealing with rejecting customers all the time. However, these being said, if you are someone who is disciplined, hardworking and has excellent relationship management skills, it may be the right career path for you. The salary packages may not be as good as other jobs but it's something active property agents are willing to accept because they believe that their jobs are worth they effort.
