So, you’re probably really excited about getting an HDB flat. We get it! It’s a big day!

But purchasing a property is a massive life event that has a huge impact on an individual, family, and society as a whole. Before you get caught up in too much excitement, here are five things you should consider before purchasing your HDB flat.

#1: Failing to look out for nearby schools.

Starting a family is one of the biggest changes in your life but when that will happen, no one can confirm that. Often, young couples tend to forget to look into it. So it’s no surprise that you may be overly focused on getting settled than to think about kids.

The kind of education you’d want your kids to receive is also important. So take some time now and figure out which would be best for your family. This will help you narrow down the areas where you’d like to live.

#2: Focussing on the wrong amenities.

When it comes to shopping for a new home, many people focus on whether or not there are nearby amenities. And while having access to a pool and a gym is nice, if you’re not into working out or swimming, they aren’t necessities.

It’s better to focus on whether or not there are restaurants within walking distance—or even closer than that, within delivery range!

#3: The noise levels in the neighbourhood throughout the day.

When looking to buy an HDB flat in Singapore, you may need to consider the noise levels of your prospective neighbourhood – Throughout the day!

We live in a close-knitted city, so there tends to be noise. But maybe you may missed these “noises” during your home viewings. It’s important to consider what you’re looking for in a new place throughout the day.

Be sure to explore the area during the day and night!

#4: Assuming that your neighbours are nightmare-free.

Remember I said that we live in a close-knitted city? Don’t forget the closes to you will be your neighbours.

We all wish for the most pleasant neighbours. But the grass on the other side ain’t greener all the time. Yes, there are nice neighbours but nightmare neighbours are one of the most common reasons existing homeowner shortcut their stay.

Be vigilant and ask around. Ask the current owners and agents!

#5: You don’t expect to drive or use the available carparks anytime soon (but suddenly get a pay raise and can afford a car).

Don’t forget factor in future developments too. There will be changes to your surrounding in the coming years. Future developments involve you and the amenities.

One important thing to consider when deciding where to live is your future plans. Do you want to start a family? If it’s a new area, what are the upcoming projects around this area? These will have a huge impact on where you should live.

When you start looking for a place to live, think about life after work. If you’re planning on starting a family or retiring in the near future, you’ll want to be sure to choose a place that can accommodate your needs.

Conclusion:

We’re not here to tell you what to do, but be sure to have thought about your future. These are things to consider when thinking about where you live.

With that in mind, you need to take into account your lifestyle and financial plans when choosing where to live. Remember, the HDB flat is just one of the aspects of your home. It isn’t the only thing that matters. For some people, space matters more; for others, it’s amenities or safety. But these are not things we often consider when looking at advertisements for certain housing projects.

So it might be a good idea to broaden your scope beyond the flat itself—and your finances beyond the purely monetary considerations—when you buy your new home.
